Pianist Chi Ho Han, Bachauer Silver Medalist

A pianist with "discipline and poetry at his fingertips" [Bachtrack], Chi Ho Han most recently completed and ranked in the 2016 Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition in Brussels, but has won awards and competitions all over the world, all throughout his career. He's currently a postgraduate student at the University for Music, Theater and Media in Hannover Germany.

Tonight Chi Ho plays beautiful music, some of which from his brand new album "Chopin and Schumann: Piano Works", and chats with Steve about festivals, practicing, and the toy pianos of childhood.

Barlow Bradford conducts the Utah Chamber Artists

This performance is the last hurrah for the choir before they jet off to Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic on tour. They’ll be gone a little over a week and perform in a different historical church each night. 

This isn’t the first time the choir’s packed up and crossed an ocean. They’ve previously toured in England (where they sung at London’s St. Paul Cathedral), in France (where they sung at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris) and in Israel (where they performed with the Israel Chamber Orchestra). They’ve also toured stateside in Utah and Idaho; and California at the invitation of the Crystal Cathedral. 

Barlow Bradford founded the ensemble in 1991 and has conducted the choir ever since.

Michael Lucarelli -- Classical Guitar

Michael Lucarelli is a classical guitarist and composer who has been performing throughout the United States for more than 30 years. His music videos on YouTube have garnered more than 20 million views collectively, an amount unheard of for a classical guitarist. He has a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Utah and a Masters in guitar performance from the University of Arizona.

In our studio tonight he chats with host Steven Kapp Perry about what it means to be an artist and composer, some of the locations of his videos, and some of the greatest comments his videos have received. We took some of our own, too!

University of Utah Faculty Ensemble

If you’re a viola player, a lover of musical history, or even just a fan of baroque music, then today is your lucky day! We’ll be hearing not just one, not just two, but three different kinds of violas—including one with way more strings than you think it could have. We’ll also feature some baroque vocals and a harpsichord for good measure.

Our guests include Dr. Robert Baldwin, Director of Orchestral Activities and professor of music at the University of Utah, and Music Director of the Salt Lake Symphony.  He’ll be playing viola and viola d’amore, and he’s brought with him:

Music from the British Isles

Tonight we've left our usual home at Studio 6 for a field trip to Brigham Young University's Museum of Art! The Island homes of Ireland, Scotland and England have given us music both sublime and silly, enthralling and thoroughly entertaining. Robin Hancock - Classical Piano Favorites

We’ve had 85 pianists on the show so far and not one has played Claire De Lune. Thank goodness it finally gets played in this episode thanks to Robin Hancock! As well as the theme music from the rip-roaring rootin’ tootin’ western: The Magnificent Seven; the creepy Die Erlkonig; and classical compositions of Bach and Brahms and Tchaikovsky.

Dr. Hancock is a member of the renowned American Piano Quartet and is part of the Piano Faculty at the BYU School of Music. Professor Hancock is active as a soloist with a knack for putting together entertaining programs. For example, one concert of his featured ALL the music in the Gershwin Songbook from 1932 along with the piano transcription of An American in Paris.

Vedrana Subotic is a pianist and the director of the Intermezzo Chamber Music Series of Salt Lake City. In this hour she performs Beethoven’s Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 1 No. 3 with Utah Symphony musicians: Anne Lee (cello) and Claude Halter (violin).

There was a time when piano trios were the genre of amateur musicians. You wrote a piano trio because you were an up-and-coming artist making your way through beginner coursework. Mozart and Haydn both dutifully contributed to the genre, and naturally did well, but it was Beethoven (in his classical rock star style) that turned this musical “chore” into an astonishing, money-making, and entertaining genre. 

His set of three piano trios (opus 1) broke rules. He instigated equality between the instruments—the cello and violin were no longer mere accompaniment. He also added another movement and stretched the length from a 10 or 12 minute piece to nearly 30. 

He debuted his three trios during a soiree at Prince Lichnowsky’s estate. Joseph Haydn was in the audience along with a lot of other wealthy and well-connected people and they left impressed with what they’d heard. When the trios were ready for printing the publisher had 241 orders for scores. 

Of his three piano trios, Beethoven’s third, in C minor, was the one that broke the most rules and that’s the one we’re hearing today!

The Richter Uzur Duo features Acoustic Guitar and Cello

The Richter Uzur Duo is a one-of-a-kind guitar and cello duo that plays a whimsical mix of rock, world, and classical music. Comprised of world-renowned musicians Viktor Uzur and Brad Richter, the Duo has composed and arranged the largest repertoire of guitar/cello duets in existence and has performed hundreds of concerts in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. In the United States the RUDuo is known for its regular appearances on NPR’s Performance Today as well as frequent national and international broadcasts on programs such as PBS’s WoodSongs and NPR’s Classical Guitar Alive. Their debut CD entitled "String Theory" was released in 2013.

Between original compositions and arrangements of classic favorites, the musicians chat with host Steven Kapp Perry about their backgrounds and passions and musical experiences.

Gifted Music School with Bill McGlaughlin

Eugene Watanabe is the founder of Salt Lake City's Gifted Music School, a non-profit children's music school committed to creating a new standard for music education in the US. With him are a number of the school's students here to perform, and they switch in and out of chairs during the performances -- sometimes between movements -- so that everyone has a chance to play!

Also here is Bill McGlaughlin, the Peabody Award-winning host of Saint Paul Sunday and Exploring Music on WFMT in Chicago.

Dustin Gledhill and Lucas Pullin with A Taste of Brazil

Classical duo Dustin Gledhill and Lucas Pullin are in Utah to perform a special musical program that they recently played at a sold-out show in New Orleans. Sponsored by the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans, "Taste of Brazil" is a multi-medium repertoire that explores the mixed rhythms and movements that make up the core of Brazilian musical classics. Featuring food, dancing, and plenty of music, the pair is taking the show next to New York, and then on to Brazil itself!

Dustin and Lucas are both multi-instrumentalists and graduates of the Julliard performance conservatory in New York City.

NEXT Ensemble with Music for Strings

An ensemble designed expressly to bring people together, the NEXT Ensemble out of Salt Lake City, Utah is a rotating group of musicians that pushes the boundaries of what it means to play classical music. Featuring a blend of time periods and styles, each with unique expression, tonight in-studio the ensemble features a traditional string quartet along with a clarinet and an upright bass.

Alex and Aubrey Woods, violin

Alex is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and Yale University with a master’s degree in violin performance. He is also a professor of violin at Brigham Young University. Aubrey graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Violin Performance and has commissioned and recorded music for violin and piano on Tantara records. She is currently the Concert Master for the Ballet West orchestra.
