The Portland Cello Project

The Portland Cello Project is a group of players with very diverse backgrounds, and with a constantly-changing lineup of artists and musicians those backgrounds always different, but the one thing they all have in common is this: They play the cello! 

Led by Douglas Jenkins, the Portland Cello Project brings the cello to places it wouldn't normally be heard. From Prairie Home Companion to  to touring with heavy metalist Buckethead to sports bars in Texas to punk clubs in Boston to haltime shows in Portland, you name it they've done it. They also play music you wouldn't normally hear on the instrument from Beethoven to Adele to Kanye West and Pantera. 

Today they share a number of classical and modern selections, all cello and all fantastic.

William Hagen, Violin, The Devil's Trill

Twenty-three-year-old violinist William Hagen is the third prize winner of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition (the highest ranking American since 1980). 

Tonight in-between violin selections (all performed from memory!) he visits with host Steven Kapp Perry about everything from baseball, trills, and National Geographic photography!

The Magic Flute UVU Opera Workshop

Mozart's two-act opera, "The Magic Flute" is world-renowned and loved. UVU's Opera Workshop, directed by Isaac Hurtado, performs solo and chorus selections from their production, set in 80's New York instead of the 18th century!

Rhonda Rider, cellist

Rhonda rider is a musician just as comfortable in a concert hall in front of thousands as she is in the great outdoors. Artist-in-Residence at both Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks, her cello recordings have been nominated for Grammy awards and cited as Critic's Choice in both the New York Times and the Boston Globe. She currently serves as the Chair of Strings and on cello faculty for the Boston Conservatory at Berkelee and Boston University.

Norman Kreiger, pianist

A native of Los Angeles, Norman Krieger is one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation and is highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair. In fall 2016 he joined the faculty of the distinguished Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Currently in town as a special guest of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, Mr. Krieger is known for his master classes, storytelling, and remarkable skill as a musician.

Westminster Opera Studio, selections from La Boheme

In the mid 1800's, author Henri Murger wrote a collection of loosely-related short stories that he published as Scene de la vie de Boheme. Literary enthusiasts were fond of the book but it didn't become truly popular until a local playwright was asked to adapt part of the text for the stage. Fifty years later, Giacomo Puccini's operatic version of the story premiered in Turin at the Teatro Regio as: La Boheme.
